Calling the police 999
This is a very useful number! The police are there 24 hours a day to help if there is a frightening situation at home. It does not cost anything to call 999 and the person on the phone will ask you where you are and if you need someone to come and help; they will send someone very quickly if you let them know where you are and what is happening.
Dealing with emotions
Young people experiencing abuse often find they have lots of difficult emotions to deal with, and sometimes try to find ways of coping with them.
Some ways of coping with difficult emotions can be quite risky: sometimes young people hurt themselves with objects, or cut themselves or taking drugs or alcohol.
There are many other ways you can try to cope with difficult emotions, and you will find that different things suit different people but here are a few ideas if you feel very low, or angry or frustrated:
- Write down your feelings or ideas as words, poems or stories;
- Drawing or painting can let you express how you’re feeling in pictures if you find words difficult. You don’t have to be good at art to find this useful!
- Playing sport, going for a run or swim or going to the gym can help you to ‘let off steam’;
- Some people find doing relaxing things like playing music, having a bath or drawing can help.
